Mindfulness

Mindfulness has become something of a buzzword when it comes to emotional and physical self-care. Increasingly, the practice is used to help with everything from mild anxiety to depression, with a growing body of research backing up the benefits to better overall wellbeing.

So what is mindfulness? The simplest way to think about it is as an “in-the-moment” awareness. It is about fully focusing on whatever it is that you are doing. A simple example is the mundane task of washing up before bed. Your mind naturally wanders, but simply notice the warmth of the water on your skin, and the creaminess of the soap or lotion you’re applying. This attention is mindfulness in action.

There are many ways to begin each day with mindful intention. Everyone has a morning routine, schedule, and time constraints to work within, so try out a few of these ideas to begin a daily mindful practice as you begin to live in the “now”:

While your head is on the pillow, take a moment to set the tone for a more positive day. Practice a little loving kindness by saying these words: May I be safe, May I be happy, May I be healthy, May I live today with ease.

Choose one of your daily rituals to be more intentional. For example, when brushing your teeth, feel the toothpaste in your hand and notice the scent. How does it smell and taste? You don’t need to have an opinion on what you’re doing-this is simply about noticing what is taking place in the moment.

You could turn getting dressed into a mindful action. Think of something you’re grateful for today while selecting your clothes. Ask yourself why you are thankful and let yourself soak in the gratitude. Repeat this short affirmation, “I am ready for today.”

BREATHE. FEEL. OBSERVE. That’s mindfulness.
