Natural Pest Control

At the end of every summer, I’m visited by ants around my kitchen sink. I can’t stand the thought of them around my food prep area. I’ve been a non-toxic warrior for over thirty years, so spraying Raid to deter them is always out of the question. That’s why I turn to essential oils and coffee grounds - they work every time! Orange essential oil is something ants can’t tolerate - they do not like the scent of citrus of any kind. The strong smell of the oil disrupts their pheromone trails, making it difficult for them to navigate. So I got a four-ounce spray bottle, put 30 drops of sweet orange essential oil in it, and filled the rest with water. I spray around the sink and where the wall meets the countertop with the spray. Then, I place coffee grounds in my disposal and leave them there. It works! The only downside is you have to do it about once a week until the first frost comes, and then, they go away naturally.

When the weather is cool - and gets even colder - mice like to come into your warm house. However, peppermint essential oil will deter their entry if you spray it once a week around your doors and if any cracks are leading to your garage or door. You can also take a small linen bag, which allows the scent of the peppermint to permeate, stuff it with cotton balls, and spray the cotton balls with peppermint. Then, throw it into the corner of your garage for added protection.

Using essential oils for pest control instead of chemical-based methods offers several benefits, especially regarding health, safety, and environmental impact. Here are some key reasons to choose essential oils over chemical pest control:

1. Health and Safety

  • Non-toxic to humans and pets: Essential oils like peppermint, lavender, and eucalyptus are generally safer for humans, pets, and children. Chemical pesticides often contain toxic substances that can cause respiratory issues, skin irritations, or long-term health problems.

  • Fewer allergic reactions: Many people experience allergic reactions to synthetic pesticide chemicals. When used appropriately, essential oils are less likely to trigger such responses.

2. Environmental Benefits

  • Biodegradable and eco-friendly: Essential oils are derived from plants, making them biodegradable and less harmful to the environment than synthetic chemicals that can contaminate water, soil, and non-targeted species.

  • Low risk of pollution: Chemical pesticides can pollute air, water sources, and soil, leading to broader ecological damage. Essential oils break down naturally and do not leave long-lasting residues.
